Jussi Björling’s Operatic Career (July 21, 1930 – April 1, 1960)

Jussi Björling’s career included performances of opera, operetta, oratorios, masses, and song concerts.  We can get a good idea of the whole career by surveying the chronologies collected by Harald Henrysson, as published in his Jussi Björling Phonography (1993), and as an appendix to the biography Jussi co-authored by Anna-Lisa Björling and Andrew Farkas (1996).

To date, Harald Henrysson has documented a total of 932 performances of opera and operetta by Björling, as well as some 1086 concerts of various other types. (In addition there were 895 known concerts by Jussi as a child performing with his brothers and father in "the Björling Quartet"!)

The chronology given here is based on Henrysson’s data but presents it in a different way, in terms of each operatic role he assumed, arranged in chronological order of the debut date of each role.  We owe this arrangement to Enrique Gilardoni, South American correspondent for JBS-USA and a well known speaker for radio and lecture programs, especially in South America.
